What is the BTBC?

The Bioscience & Technology Business Center (BTBC) is an economic development enterprise focused on creating, recruiting, growing and retaining high tech and life science companies that produce jobs in Lawrence and Northeast Kansas. BTBC is the University of Kansas’s technology commercialization partner and is located on the West Campus of KU, with expansion facilities in Kansas City and west Lawrence. BTBC is a unique coalition of local government, private industry and academia, with future growth comprised of an Innovation District at the University of Kansas.

Where is the BTBC located?

The BTBC’s main facility is located on the West Campus of KU, with expansion facilities in west Lawrence and at the KU Medical Center (KUMC) campus in Kansas City.

Is parking available at each facility?

Free parking is available for tenants and visitors at the main facility and the west Lawrence facility.

If you are a guest or tenant at BTBC at KUMC, paid parking is available in the P5 garage located directly behind the building. KUMC tenants can pay for an assigned spot in this garage on a monthly or yearly basis.

Is the BTBC only for KU faculty, staff, and students?

While the BTBC provides support to many KU spinouts, it is open to all companies in the high-tech and life sciences industries. Both small and large companies come to the BTBC from all across campus, across the country, and even across the world.

What does the BTBC offer?

The BTBC offers its companies a wide range of business services. Drawing on extensive startup and technology experience, the BTBC can help with companies with general business planning, commercial feasibility assessments, financial modeling and assistance, grant management, market research and analysis, management, and more.

Companies can also tap into the BTBC’s network of public and private organizations and develop strategic collaborations. Due to the BTBC’s close proximity to the University of Kansas, companies can continue to grow connections by leveraging the university talent pipeline.

Additionally, the BTBC provides ultra-high speed, low-latency internet connection, which allows companies to develop a better end-user experience without extra expense.

Shared equipment rooms include the following:

  • Centrifuge
  • Ice machine
  • -80°C freezer space
  • -20°C freezer space

What are the requirements to lease space at the BTBC?

To lease space at the BTBC, you must have a formally established company that is in the high-tech or life-sciences industries or can demonstrate high-growth potential. The BTBC looks for companies with highly ambitious goals and aims for quick growth in term of revenue and employment.

Do I have to give up equity to have space at the BTBC?

Unlike other business centers, the BTBC does not require you to give up equity in return for office space, lab space, or business services.

If I don’t need office or lab space, is the BTBC still for me?

The BTBC Virtual Business Suite program provides access to shared workspace, conference rooms, and other tenant amenities including BTBC staff and business analysts. This may be an option for you depending on your needs. Learn more here.
