Security Benefit (SB), a leader in the U.S. retirement market, is seeking a Data Analyst Intern to join the Data Science and Governance team. Security Benefit has been dedicated to helping clients plan and save for retirement for nearly five decades. Over the last several years it has become a top provider of retirement products and services through a nationwide network of independent financial representatives. This position will work in our home office in Topeka, Kansas.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Data Analyst Intern will be responsible for the analysis and evaluation of data.  The Data Analyst Intern will act as a resource for project work as well as internal data quality and governance initiatives.  The Data Analyst Intern will assist as a point of contact between business users, subject matter experts, and technology resources to meet business needs.

General Accountabilities:

  • Provide source-to-target mappings for data sets
  • Perform testing and validation of data sets
  • Write and apply data quality rules
  • Facilitate writing and maintenance of business data glossary in conjunction with business data stewards and other subject matter experts
  • Create data quality dashboards and KPI reports about data
  • Document structures and types of business data


Students eligible for internship will be current, full-time students available to work approximately 19 hours per week. Student will be expected to work during and in between semesters and up to full-time during the summer. This is not a summer-only internship.


  • Currently enrolled full time in degree program for Computer Science, Business Administration, Business Analytics or related field
  • Demonstrated ability with SQL, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio
  • Strong query skills entailing multiple joins
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Highly organized and strong follow-up and time management skills
  • A quick learner with good listening skills that is self-motivated
  • Ability to produce documentation for presentation, coupled with a strong interest in further developing technical skills
  • Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language
  • Ability to document workflows and processes

The following criteria would be considered advantageous:

  • Knowledge of data analytics and machine learning
  • Knowledge of data integration approaches
  • Experience or working knowledge of AWS Big Data Services
