LAWRENCE — Julie Nagel, interim associate vice chancellor for innovation and entrepreneurship at the University of Kansas, has been named to the position permanently. In that role she serves as president of KU Innovation and Collaboration (KUIC), which manages intellectual property and technology commercialization at all KU campuses. She also provides leadership for the university’s overall economic development mission. The appointment is effective immediately.

“Julie has proven herself while serving in an interim capacity,” said Jim Tracy, vice chancellor for research. “She’s very knowledgeable of the academic world and the business world and is highly regarded by both, in Kansas and elsewhere. KUIC is an important part of KU research, and I’m pleased to have such a capable person in charge of that office.”

Nagel also reports to Richard Barohn, vice chancellor for research at the KU Medical Center and president of the KU Medical Center Research Institute.

“Julie has a thorough understanding of health-related research, drug development and therapeutics,” said Barohn, “and appreciates the complementary roles of the Lawrence and Medical Center campuses. She’s also tied into BioKansas and other business-related organizations, and is intimately familiar with the Bioscience & Technology Business Center on both campuses. It’s great working with her.”

Nagel came to KU in 2011 as director of industrial partnerships. She was previously with Discovery Park at Purdue University, where she was managing director of the Oncological Sciences Center. Prior to joining Purdue in 2005, Nagel was a program director for Biotechnology Business Consultants, following service as a technical coordinator with Rubicon Genomics in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her academic background includes a bachelor’s degree in biology from John Brown University, a master’s degree in zoology from Oklahoma State University and a doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from the University of Tennessee.

“It is an honor to lead the university’s activities in corporate partnerships, commercialization and economic development,” Nagel said. “My goals will continue to be moving KU research to the market to better the lives of Kansans and fulfilling the role of KU as a driver of economic engagement in the region. We have excellent staff and a growing network of partners, and I’m pleased to be leading these initiatives.”

The University of Kansas is a major comprehensive research and teaching university. The university’s mission is to lift students and society by educating leaders, building healthy communities and making discoveries that change the world.
