KU’s Bioscience & Technology Business Center helps grow business

Kansas Commerce March 2016 Newsletter

The goal of the Bioscience & Technology Business Center (BTBC) at the University of Kansas is simple but important: to expand economic development and grow the state’s tax base by helping to support bioscience and technology focused companies in northeast Kansas.

BTBC has provided talent, facilities and business support services to 41tenant companies since the center opened its doors in 2010. These services give companies a much greater chance to succeed, which allows them to bring more economic growth and jobs to Kansas.

The center features more than 85,000-square-feet of space split between three facilities, the main facility on KU’s West Campus in Lawrence, the second an expansion facility in west Lawrence, and the third on the grounds of the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. BTBC companies employ 200 workers with an annual payroll of around $11 million.

“The BTBC features highly customizable office, dry and wet lab space; common areas for collaboration; a professional environment for companies and gigabyte high speed internet,” said G.R. Underwood, BTBC president. “We also work closely with many of our companies in order to supplement and support their management teams.”

In addition, companies can leverage an extensive network of thought and business leaders, as well as access to the vast resources at KU, Underwood said. The strong partnership with KU is one of the central reasons why businesses have come from outside of Kansas and such places as Ireland, Australia and New Zealand to be a part of the BTBC.

One success story is Crititech, a nanoparticle drug company working on cancer treatments. Crititech was started via prominent research at KU. The company was a part of the BTBC system for several years, before graduating out of the center and building its own facility in Lawrence.

Other BTBC stakeholders include the City of Lawrence, Douglas County, the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas Department of Commerce. More information can be found at https://btbcku.com/.
